About Paradise Valley Hospital

In 1904, our founder, Ellen G. White, helped to purchase 54 acres of land with the purpose of beginning a healthcare institution, Paradise Valley Hospital.

Paradise Valley Hospital is the South Bay’s oldest hospital. In fact, we are the second oldest hospital in all of San Diego County, and the largest employer in National City. For more than 100 years, Paradise Valley Hospital has served San Diego faithfully, proud of our heritage and providing numerous programs and services to meet the changing needs of our community.

Today, our 291-bed, acute care hospital features the San Diego Spine & Joint Center, a highly credentialed acute rehabilitation center, our Paradise Health & Senior Center, a fully equipped and modern cardiac catheterization lab, and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient surgical services, and 24-hour emergency services.

In addition to our healthcare services, we offer comprehensive behavioral health services on the hospital campus and Bayview campus in Chula Vista. Services include psychiatric continuum of care for adult patients, inpatient services, and intensive outpatient services.

Paradise Valley Hospital’s dedication to whole person wellness through healthy living is evident in the variety of complimentary or low-cost health education classes offered through our Center for Health Promotion. Nutrition counseling, smoking cessation classes, weight and stress management classes, and health screenings are just a few of the many offerings via The Center. Even at the mature age of 100+ years, we are progressive in our approach to healthcare.

Paradise Valley Hospital boasts a multi-cultural staff of more than 300 physicians representing a variety of specialties. Paradise Valley Hospital is a member of Prime Healthcare, of which Dr. Prem Reddy serves as chairman of the board.

The Thirsty Elephant is the amazing story of Ellen G. White’s land purchase in 1904, and the hospital’s subsequent establishment and growth. It was under the guidance of E. G. White, at the age of 77 years old, whose firm belief in the healing properties of nature guided her to this plot of land against all odds, which is now Paradise Valley Hospital.
