South Bay Rehabilitation Center

Through our actions and our words, we are committed to:

  • High-quality, personalized care
  • Comfortable, family-like setting
  • Using all available services to help our patients attain the highest level of function in the home and community

Our rehabilitation center is the only acute inpatient rehabilitation program in South Bay. We offer a complete range of treatment for patients with physical disabilities. Our specialized inpatient and outpatient programs are designed to meet each person's individual needs or injuries, with the goal of restoring as much independence as possible and significantly improving their lives.

Rehabilitation Close to Your Home

Our goal is to maximize the quality of life of our rehabilitation patients. Our compassionate staff provides a full complement of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services tailored to each patient and based on desired outcomes.

For San Diego South County residents, we offer the highest quality care close to your home and family. No matter where you received your initial hospital care, you can choose your rehabilitation facility based on convenience, location and accessibility. We accept almost all private and government insurance plans with physician referral.

Our medical director, who is specially trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation (psychiatry), and specially trained staff treat a range of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, hip fractures, and neurological impairments such as multiple sclerosis, multiple traumas, amputations, orthopedic conditions, as well as many others.

Our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program benefit patients having difficulty with self-care activities, mobility, safety, speech, swallowing, cognitive and psychosocial adjustments as a result of disabling illness, injury or degenerative disease.

South Bay Rehabilitation Center's return-to-home and return-to-community outcomes are better than regional and national outcomes. We achieve this by working closely with the patients and loved ones to establish personalized goals specific to each patient, monitor progress and formerly evaluate improvement.

Inpatient Rehabiltation

In our 22-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, we treat the following diagnoses:

  • Stroke
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Neurological conditions
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Brain dysfunction
  • Amputation
  • Spinal cord dysfunction
  • Arthritis
  • Pain syndromes
  • Burns
  • Congenital deformities and other conditions

What Makes Us Special

The South Bay Rehabilitation Center is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. CARF-accredited programs pass a stringent accreditation process that ensures patients receive the highest standards of quality care and meet international performance standards.

In addition, South Bay Rehabilitation Center services are located on the Paradise Valley Hospital campus, which means most acute medical programs that arise during your stay can be treated on-site. Patients may not have to be transferred elsewhere should the need arise for medical care.

The Family as Partner

We believe the family is an essential partner in restoring health and hope. Families are encouraged to participate in therapy, attend conferences, and visit regularly. The patient's determination and the support of family and friends all contribute to the recovery process.

This is why we encourage you to select a rehabilitation program close to home.

A Coordinated Care Team Approach

Our patients receive treatment by medical professionals who have been highly trained and are licensed or certified in their field. We're proud to be recognized for the comprehensive, high-quality care we provide.

Led by a skilled medical director who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrist), the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation team may include some or all of the following professionals:

  • Rehabilitation Nurses
  • Physical, Occupational and Recreational Therapists
  • Speech-Language Pathologists
  • Social Workers
  • Nutritionists
  • Psychologists
  • Respiratory Therapists
  • Case Managers
  • Other Specialists (as needed)

Outpatient Therapy

The South Bay Rehabilitation Center offers patients a variety of therapeutic services on an outpatient basis—all customized to meet our patient's specific needs and goals.

We offer comprehensive outpatient treatment for neurological, musculoskeletal, spine, neck, and hand injuries. Our primary services include:

  • Physical Therapy – hands-on treatment for orthopedic and neurologic conditions
  • Occupational Therapy – treatment focused on return-to-daily activities and productive employment. We also provide specialized hand rehabilitation.
  • Speech Pathology – treatment of communication difficulties, swallowing disorders and problems with cognitive (thinking) skills.

Our skilled multidisciplinary staff is dedicated to providing care that meets each patient's unique condition and goals. We maintain contact with the patient's referring physician and continually assess and revise treatment as necessary. The patient also receives education so that he or she can continue the recovery process at home.

Advanced Care

South Bay Rehabilitation Center is committed to offering the highest quality inpatient care. Our Neuro-Development Treatment (NDT) approach, for example, is used to provide care to patients needing assistance with functional tasks. We are one of only a few centers in San Diego emphasizing this approach. We offer a variety of specialized services, including cognitive-behavioral rehabilitation, swallow rehabilitation, treatment for bowel and bladder disorders and a skin management program.

Ongoing Therapy/Continuing Care

Our goal is to return patients to their homes. Occasionally ongoing medical care is required. In these instances, we help arrange for therapy or nursing staff members to help provide this kind of care. Another vital part of recovery involves interacting with others who have similar physical challenges. Our rehabilitation team provides information and referral to a wide range of community programs — including the Stroke Club, Meals on Wheels, Senior Day Care Center, Fitness Clinic for the Physically Disabled, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
